The Almond Milk Trend – Yay or Nay?

AUGUST 17, 2017

Whether served warm or cold, Almond Milk is undeniably hot right now. You’ll find it being blended through smoothies, poured over granola and replacing soy as the non-dairy alternative in our morning coffees! But is it really worth all the hype? Let’s find out!

  1. Almond Milk is High in Antioxidants

It is a good source of Vitamin E, so it can help prevent cancer and slow the signs of ageing. The flavonoids it contains also protects us from a number of degenerative diseases like osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes.

  1. Almond Milk is Heart Healthy

Unlike cow’s milk, almond milk contains no cholesterol and no saturated fats, so it won’t damage your cardiovascular system. It is also high in omega-3 fatty acids which helps in lowering of LDL (bad cholesterol) and in protecting your heart.

  1. Almond Milk is High in Vitamins and Minerals

Compared to soy and rice milk, almond milk has the highest concentrations of vitamins and minerals. While the other kids of milk are usually fortified with various nutrients, all of them occur naturally in almond milk. From calcium, potassium and iron to zinc, magnesium and phosphorous, this drink has a whole of benefits in store.

  1. Almond Milk is Low in Fat and Calories

Almond milk is a great milk substitute for those who are trying to lower their fat intake and cut down on calories. It contains healthy fats that help protect your heart and preserve cognitive function.

  1. Almond milk may not be safe for those with Tree Nut Allergies.

It is lactose free and contains no gluten or casein. It also contains no animal by products so it is suitable for vegans and vegetarians. However, almonds are a tree nut, so if you have a tree nut allergy, this could be dangerous for your body.

  1. Almond Milk may not be safe for Infants

It does not contain the nutrition of breast milk and baby formula, so it isn’t a great substitute for feeding infants. Feeding almond milk to infants may cause tree nut allergies to develop. Consult your doctor before you decide for yourself.

As far as trends go, almond milk is on top of our lists but please think before you start using those preservative-filled cardboard boxes. Making almond milk at home is super easy and only requires almonds and water! It’s rich, sweet and creamy and leaves its market rivals out to dry.

If you have a sweet tooth you could even add dates. Make sure you plan this recipe in advance since we recommend soaking almonds overnight. This makes them easier to peel and blend and also activates almond enzymes to improve digestion.
