History of the Taco

OCTOBER 20, 2018

You cannot talk about Mexican cuisine without ever mentioning tacos. Its an indispensable item that surprisingly doesn’t have a very long history. Historians who have studied its history have come to find that it originated around the Mexican silver mines in the 19th century. This hypothesis about tacos comes from the fact the first form of taco was called “taco de minero” which literally translates into miners taco.

Taco shops then were called Taqueria, these shops hold an important part in the history taco. For many years these shops were mostly for working class people. It was women migrants that then brought tacos to Mexican Cities to sell. These women eventually went on to make Mexico City into a taco hub, with many people making changes to it and trying out different ways to make it better.

Much later the popularity of taco bell began to rise rapidly all thanks to the famous fast food joint Taco Bell. They created a franchise so that people could experience tacos without having to travel to Mexico. But its journey in US started when migrants who travelled to Los Angeles in the early 1900s. At that point of time it was seen as something that only the lower class would eat. Also the tacos available on the market then weren’t made the exact same way as they were in Mexico, mainly because the ingredients weren’t the same.

Tacos are now widely consumed all across the world. They are longer seen as something that only the working class works consume. While the classic Mexican taco is still available and holds it own, the tacos now have been made to fit other styles too. If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, worry not you too can enjoy this Mexican delicacy. As a matter of fact the only problem with tacos would be deciding what type to choose as their so many.
